Francoise Gilot

My relationship with the word “land” is informed in part with ideas of ownership. This is a portrait of Françoise Gilot, a female painter who was often seen only in the context of her male partner. She is looking directly at the viewer yet obscuring her internal experience with a piece of nature, the red gladiola. In contrast to how she is usually viewed, she has full ownership of the narrative and offers us another way to look at our relationship with ownership including that of the land.
